Coin of the resurrection Biblical coin Pendant made from 925 Sterling Silver & Gold frame
In 2015, coins minted in Tiberias in
the year 33CE were found bearing
two intriguing symbols. These
symbols were described by
researchers Fonatanille and Kogon
(2015:135) as an ‘unusual
cornucopia’ and a ‘strange star’.
As symbols on coins of the first
century were connected to
contemporary historical events,
the two symbols were thought to be connected to a possible historical event of
importance in the eyes of Herod Antipas who minted the coin. One of the sons of Herod
the Great, Herod Antipas was king of the Galilee during the life of Jesus of Nazareth, and
the most historically documented figure to meet Jesus. Study of 1st century Galilean
Jewish-Messianic motifs offers a possible messianic-eschatological interpretation of these
two symbols, which may be connected to the death of Jesus and the belief in his
resurrection. If true, this coin represents the first historical evidence for the existence of
belief in the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth
